FORMER EINTRACHT FRANKFURT DEFENDER LAUNCHES STUNNING ATTACK ON NIKO KOVAC OVER ALLEGED TREATMENT DURING HIS CAREER
Former Eintracht Frankfurt defender Yanni Regäsel has reignited controversy surrounding Borussia Dortmund head coach Niko Kovac after making a series of explosive allegations regarding their time together in Frankfurt.
The 30-year-old, who currently plays for German fifth-tier side SV Wilhelmshaven, opened up during a candid interview on YouTube with former teammate Bilal Kamarieh. What began as a reflection on his football journey quickly turned into a detailed account of a relationship that Regäsel claims deteriorated dramatically under Kovac’s management.
Regäsel did not hold back as he described what he believes was unfair treatment during one of the most important periods of his professional career. The former defender, who represented Eintracht Frankfurt between 2016 and 2018, claimed that his standing within the squad changed suddenly and without explanation despite feeling he was performing well.
According to Regäsel, everything initially appeared positive after Kovac arrived at the club. The player said he enjoyed a healthy relationship with the coaching staff and felt optimistic about his future. However, he alleges that things changed unexpectedly and that he quickly found himself frozen out of the first-team picture.

The roots of the conflict reportedly trace back to the buildup to the 2017 DFB-Pokal final, where Frankfurt faced Borussia Dortmund. At the time, Regäsel had become frustrated with his limited opportunities and participated in an interview with a local newspaper.
The defender claims he simply expressed confusion about his lack of playing time and insisted he never intended to criticize his manager publicly. However, he believes the publication presented his comments in a way that created the impression he was openly attacking Kovac ahead of a major cup final.
According to Regäsel, the article generated immediate attention and created a significant stir within the club. He recalled receiving numerous calls and messages after seeing headlines that suggested he had launched a public challenge against the coach.
The fallout was swift.
Regäsel revealed that senior club figures, including sporting director Fredi Bobic and club president Peter Fischer, confronted him regarding the interview. He was subsequently encouraged to apologize to Kovac and explain that his comments had been misrepresented.
The former Frankfurt player said he met with the coach and offered an apology, believing the situation had been resolved. Kovac reportedly responded in a relaxed manner, joking about Regäsel’s Berlin roots and suggesting there were no hard feelings.
Yet despite that apparent reconciliation, Regäsel claims he was omitted from the squad for the DFB-Pokal final against Dortmund, a match Frankfurt ultimately lost 2-1.
For the defender, that decision marked the beginning of a much deeper breakdown in relations.
Regäsel alleges that the following season brought even greater difficulties. He claims he was effectively banished from first-team activities and instructed not to report for training with the senior squad.
The defender said the situation left him shocked and confused because he did not understand what he had done wrong. Feeling isolated and desperate for answers, Regäsel eventually confronted Kovac directly.
It was during that alleged conversation that Regäsel claims the Dortmund manager delivered words he has never forgotten.
According to the former player, Kovac told him that he considered him one of the strongest players available but simply did not like him personally and therefore would not select him.

The claim is impossible to independently verify, but Regäsel insisted during the interview that the conversation happened exactly as he described it. He stated that the exchange remained deeply embedded in his memory years later because of the impact it had on his career and confidence.
Regäsel also offered his own theory regarding why the relationship may have deteriorated.
He suggested that his connections to influential individuals in Frankfurt may have contributed to tensions with the coach. According to the defender, he maintained friendships with people who were well connected within the city and possessed significant influence behind the scenes.
While he stopped short of providing definitive evidence, Regäsel said he believes Kovac was uncomfortable with those relationships and may have viewed them negatively.
The former defender painted a picture of growing frustration and emotional strain as he found himself increasingly marginalized. He described a period during which he felt completely disconnected from the club and uncertain about his future.
One of the most striking moments of the interview came when Regäsel discussed his mental state during that period.
He admitted that his frustration reached dangerous levels and suggested he came close to losing control emotionally. Reflecting on those difficult months, he said he realized he needed to step away from the situation before his anger overwhelmed him.
The comments have generated considerable discussion among football supporters, particularly because of the severity of the language used.
Regäsel’s criticism did not stop with his own experiences.
The former Frankfurt defender accused Kovac of repeatedly targeting influential figures within dressing rooms. He claimed that the coach preferred to maintain complete authority and viewed strong personalities as potential threats to his control.
As examples, Regäsel referenced former Frankfurt stars Alex Meier and Max Kruse, suggesting that both players eventually found themselves at odds with Kovac during different stages of their careers.
Those allegations represent Regäsel’s personal interpretation of events and have not been publicly endorsed by the individuals mentioned.
Kovac, meanwhile, has built a long and successful coaching career since his Frankfurt days. After guiding Eintracht Frankfurt to DFB-Pokal glory in 2018, he enjoyed spells with major clubs including Bayern Munich before eventually taking charge of Borussia Dortmund.

Widely respected for his demanding coaching style and strong leadership approach, Kovac has earned praise from many players and football executives throughout his managerial career.
As of now, neither Kovac nor Borussia Dortmund have publicly responded to Regäsel’s latest remarks.
Nevertheless, the interview has reopened discussion about one of the more controversial relationships from Kovac’s time in Frankfurt. Whether the allegations lead to further responses remains to be seen, but Regäsel’s candid account has certainly ensured that a chapter many believed was long closed has once again become a topic of debate across German football.
