FORMER EINTRACHT FRANKFURT DEFENDER LAUNCHES STUNNING ATTACK ON NIKO KOVAC OVER ALLEGED TREATMENT DURING HIS CAREER
Former Eintracht Frankfurt defender Yanni Regäsel has reignited controversy surrounding Borussia Dortmund head coach Niko Kovac after making a series of explosive allegations regarding their time together in Frankfurt.
The 30-year-old, who currently plays for German fifth-tier side SV Wilhelmshaven, opened up during a candid interview on YouTube with former teammate Bilal Kamarieh. What began as a reflection on his football journey quickly turned into a detailed account of a relationship that Regäsel claims deteriorated dramatically under Kovac’s management.
Regäsel did not hold back as he described what he believes was unfair treatment during one of the most important periods of his professional career. The former defender, who represented Eintracht Frankfurt between 2016 and 2018, claimed that his standing within the squad changed suddenly and without explanation despite feeling he was performing well.
According to Regäsel, everything initially appeared positive after Kovac arrived at the club. The player said he enjoyed a healthy relationship with the coaching staff and felt optimistic about his future. However, he alleges that things changed unexpectedly and that he quickly found himself frozen out of the first-team picture.
The roots of the conflict reportedly trace back to the buildup to the 2017 DFB-Pokal final, where Frankfurt faced Borussia Dortmund. At the time, Regäsel had become frustrated with his limited opportunities and participated in an interview with a local newspaper.
The defender claims he simply expressed confusion about his lack of playing time and insisted he never intended to criticize his manager publicly. However, he believes the publication presented his comments in a way that created the impression he was openly attacking Kovac ahead of a major cup final.
According to Regäsel, the article generated immediate attention and created a significant stir within the club. He recalled receiving numerous calls and messages after seeing headlines that suggested he had launched a public challenge against the coach.
