LEEDS UNITED MOVE CLOSER TO LANDING HIGHLY-RATED MANCHESTER UNITED TEENAGER AS ACADEMY RECRUITMENT DRIVE CONTINUES

Leeds United appear set to strengthen their youth ranks with the addition of one of Manchester United’s most highly regarded academy prospects, as reports indicate that teenage winger Silva Mexes is on the verge of completing a move to Elland Road.

The 16-year-old attacker is expected to join Leeds on a scholarship agreement before signing his first professional contract after turning 17 next year. The move is viewed as another significant statement of intent from Leeds, who continue to invest heavily in the future of their academy while simultaneously preparing for the challenges of Premier League football.

While much of the attention surrounding Leeds this summer has focused on strengthening the senior squad, club officials have also remained committed to improving the long-term foundation of the club. Developing young players has become an increasingly important strategy, not only from a footballing perspective but also as a way of creating valuable first-team assets and reducing future transfer spending.

The potential arrival of Mexes is being seen by many as a major success for Leeds’ recruitment department. The talented winger has spent his developmental years within Manchester United’s academy system, widely regarded as one of the strongest youth setups in English football. Convincing a player of his reputation to leave Old Trafford for Thorp Arch is therefore considered a noteworthy achievement.

According to reports, Mexes will initially link up with Leeds United’s Under-18 squad but is also expected to gain experience with the Under-21 side during the upcoming campaign. The club believes that exposing him to different age groups could accelerate his development and prepare him for higher levels of competition.

What makes the story even more intriguing is the teenager’s footballing heritage. Silva Mexes Tyler-Earnshaw is the son of former Wales international striker Robert Earnshaw, a player remembered fondly across the Football League for his prolific goalscoring exploits. Earnshaw enjoyed a distinguished career featuring spells with several clubs and remains one of Wales’ most recognizable footballing figures.

Having grown up in a football environment, Mexes has already attracted attention for his technical ability, pace, and attacking instincts. He has also represented Thailand at youth international level, highlighting the diverse background that has contributed to his development as a player.

Leeds supporters have reacted enthusiastically to the news, with many viewing the signing as another indication that the club is building for the future rather than focusing solely on immediate results. Youth recruitment has become a major component of Leeds’ long-term strategy, and securing players with high ceilings is viewed as essential to maintaining competitiveness in the years ahead.

Reports suggest that Leeds faced competition from several clubs for Mexes’ signature. Premier League sides Ipswich Town and Nottingham Forest were both believed to have shown strong interest in acquiring the youngster. However, Leeds appear to have won the race, convincing the winger that his pathway to development and potential first-team opportunities is best served in West Yorkshire.

The move would continue a growing trend of Leeds targeting emerging talent from Manchester United’s academy. Mexes is expected to become the third young player to make the switch from Old Trafford to Thorp Arch in recent months.

Earlier, promising youngster Edward Ibrovic-Fletcher completed a move to Leeds, while reports have also linked Wales youth international full-back Alfie Walker with a transfer to the club. Together, these arrivals demonstrate Leeds’ determination to identify and recruit elite young talent before they establish themselves elsewhere.

From Manchester United’s perspective, the departure of Mexes has reportedly generated disappointment among some supporters and youth football observers. Reactions from those close to the club suggest there is genuine belief in the winger’s potential, with some questioning whether allowing him to leave could prove to be a mistake in the future.

Such responses only add to the excitement surrounding his arrival at Leeds. Whenever a rival club’s supporters express frustration at losing a prospect, it often serves as an indication of the player’s quality and future promise.

Of course, potential alone guarantees nothing in football. Many highly-rated academy players struggle to make the transition into senior football, while others exceed expectations and establish themselves at the highest level. Leeds will therefore be keen to provide Mexes with the right environment, coaching, and opportunities to maximize his talent.

The club has invested significantly in its academy infrastructure in recent years, aiming to create a development pathway capable of producing first-team footballers on a regular basis. By combining homegrown prospects with carefully selected recruits from other academies, Leeds hope to build a sustainable model that benefits the club both on and off the pitch.

For Mexes, the move represents an exciting new chapter. Leaving a club as prestigious as Manchester United is never an easy decision, particularly for a teenager. However, the opportunity to play a prominent role within Leeds’ youth setup may ultimately provide the platform he needs to accelerate his progression.

As preparations continue for the new season, attention will now turn to how quickly the young winger adapts to his new surroundings. Expectations are understandably high, but there is also recognition that patience will be required as he continues his development.

For now, Leeds supporters can be encouraged by what appears to be another ambitious piece of academy recruitment. If the glowing assessments surrounding Silva Mexes prove accurate, the Whites may have secured one of the most exciting young prospects available this summer. Whether he eventually reaches the first team remains to be seen, but there is little doubt that Leeds believe they have captured a player with a very bright future ahead of him.
